The Weekend Exploits of Suburban Adventure Girl

This was a bit of an unusual weekend for Noa. Despite her commitment to the rugged stylings of a Suburban Adventuress, this was perhaps the laziest and most uneventful weekend ever experienced by the Sahl household.

Everyone slept late. After trying (without success) to negotiate a guaranteed end of rain, to be followed by a walk in the blue stroller, Noa seemed to give herself over to the rain-inspired lethargy of the day.

Noa rejected any suggestion that she walk on her treadmill, ride on her bike or even do yoga with Mommy. She decided, instead, that she wanted to hang out in the hammock (with zuzzies), hang out in her spinning swing (with zuzzies) and rock in her Woo-woo chair (with zuzzies.) She also enjoyed cleaning up her room, jumping after swings and reading her journal, but most of the day was about going from chair-to-chair.
Noa enjoyed carrying Mommy Monkey over her shoulder everywhere and insisted on wearing her pink knit cap (which she'd worn to bed - with her hair scarf still peeking out) ALL WEEKEND! She only let me take if off her once, Sunday morning, to brush her hair and put the scarf back in her hair.

While it was a bit out of the ordinary for a Noa weekend,  the rainy weather seemed to have a similar sluggish affect on all of us so, so we just decided to roll with it.

On Sunday, Noa talked to Grammy on FaceTime and did a great job communicating that she was eating breakfast and that later she was going to walk to the car and go to school.

Overall a very chill weekend.

A New Year's Miracle: Doggie Found!

1/11/2021

Back in March, we lost Noa's beloved Blue Green Yellow Doggie. Doggie was one of Noa's first toys - she was only about a month old when Doggie came into our lives and for 14 years, they were inseparable. We lived in terror of the day that Doggie would disappear. That is happened at the start of the pandemic only made it even more challenging... and mysterious!

We knew Doggie had to be in the house. We hadn't gone further then our own back porch for over a week. We looked everywhere. We moved furniture. Looked in every pocket (so we thought.) Eventually, I convinced Noa to embrace a lessor "Doggie" we called "Greentail Doggie" (whose tail was green thanks to a permanent marker.)

On January 1st, just as Noa was getting ready for bed, I put on a hoodie that apparently I hadn't touched since March. The pocket felt heavy. I reached in, than there he was. I filmed the happy reunion and created this video to commemorate this amazing moment.
After the initial reunion, Noa and doggie shared some kisses with Mommy.

So much to share! Noa had a great holiday break. She was very communicative. She did well when the schedule had to change due to weather, or Mom & Dad's work schedule, and at times would suggest changes to the schedule that made it more palatable for her. For example, she decided that she liked to walk on the Treadmill Mill before breakfast, which turned out to be a great idea that became a regular part of our Winter Break schedule.

This was the first year that Noa seemed to genuinely look forward to the prospect of opening gifts. Because it was just the three of us, we were able to open gifts at Noa's pace which was great. We brailled tags for all the gifts and Noa did a great job reading tags and giving gifts to the appropriate person.

Noa also liked putting things in the front pocket of her hooddie, especially zuzzies.
So, what did Noa get for Christmas?
  • A number of bracelets (both elastic and slap bracelets with shapes on them.)
  • A soft hoodie with ears that she likes wearing to bed.
  • Fisker hole-punches (square, circle, triangle, star) which she later used to make shapes that we ironed on shirts, and 10 hearts of different textures that we used to velcro to put in a put.
  • A Barbie Styling head to practice putting hair up - we've only used it a few times but she seems interested.
  • A shape puzzle with a timer (but we haven't tried it with the timer yet.)
  • 3 pairs of gloves, including one long pair of gloves that inspired her to ask Mommy for her arm warmers which became very popular both indoors and out.
  • Socks, pants, coins to sort, a new backpack.

Talk to Me

The Talking Hamster isn't new, but Noa spent quite a while with it one day experimenting with the different ways she could make it respond. This video is a bit on the long side, but I thought it was pretty interesting to watch her try to figure out what make this toy tick.

Winter Gear: it's for inside too!

This tells you a lot about what our weekend was all about.

By the way, the sweater featured in this series was Mommy's sweater. Mommy was, in fact, wearing this sweater on Friday when Noa got home. She felt the sweater and said that she wanted to have a soft sweater. I told her I'd wash it and she could wear it Saturday.

Saturday morning she put on the sweater and declared it "Noa's soft sweater."

"Oh," I said. "I thought Noa was wearing Mommy's sweater."

Her answer: "Noa's sweater." So that was that.
Winter Gear is great for bedtime
Winter Gear is great for meal time (but you have to take off your gloves)
Winter gear is great for going to the basement for gym-time
Winter gear is great for going downstairs to the living room

Noa had a great weekend and there was something about her entire demeanor that seemed different this weekend - more engaged, more focused, though of course still super silly.

We were quite struck when, at horsey on Saturday, her trainer Margaret asked, "How many ears does horsey have?" When Noa didn't answer, she added, "Does horsey have 1 ear or 3 ears?" Immediately Noa responded, "Two!" We are so used to giving Noa options that include the correct answer, that we never considered what would happen if all the options we gave her were wrong! In any case, this turned out to be a fun game, and Noa seemed to like knowing the right answer that was different from the ones suggested to her.

Noa also seemed to really enjoy a rhythm (or maybe a short poem?) she came up with during her bath. It went like this: "hot water on hair and chair." She repeated it a number of times and later shared it with Daddy during breakfast.

In other news, Noa did a great job of reading her journal with Mommy and spelled out the few words that she didn't understand (usually because they were names.)  She was also very happy that Mommy had followed her requested from last week and did shopping for shirts with shapes on them.
Of course, what is a weekend with Noa without a dose of super silliness? One of the things Noa seems to really enjoy is when food falls on the floor. As you will see from the video here, it's often the best part of the weekend.

BTW, a quick note from last week that I'd neglected to mention. Last weekend Noa seemed to really get that Mommy and Daddy and Noa all share the name Sahl. This felt very new: Noa Sahl, Mommy Sahl, Daddy Sahl. We talked about that being our name for our family.

Noa had a great weekend at home. She clearly enjoyed all the Halloween festivities at school. She wore her big, funny glasses and bandana all the home and all through a long ride on the blue stroller. She finally took the glasses off once she was in the house, but she kept the bandana on until bedtime and then wanted to put the bandana on her walker overnight and made sure I understood that she wanted to wear it again on Saturday. She also wanted to wear the same shirt in the morning (a purple shirt with two bird embroidered on it.) She also wanted to spell bandana several times. She was thrilled Saturday morning to find that her bandana was still on her walker, and wore it around her neck all day.

Noa was also very attached to a pair of purple and blue socks that she wore to horsey on Saturday, so much so that she didn't want to take them off when we got home even though they were cold and wet. Ultimately, I convinced her that we should put them in the dryer and then she could wear them later. She even came with me to put them in the dryer and press the start button.

Saturday night, she told me she wanted the bandana on the walker again, and wanted to wear the blue and purple socks again as well. Unfortunately, I'd neglected to wash her purple shirt Saturday night (though I should have guessed she'd want it again) but she was agreeable - and settled for another shirt - when I told her I'd wash the purple one so she could wear it back to school.

In other news -
  • Noa asked me how to spell "lips" but when I got to the letter "p" she told me she was finished with "p" (she's done this before, she seems to want me to spell it differently) - we went around on this a few times with her continuing to tell me she was finished with "p."  Usually she eventually just gives up, but this time she started suggesting other letters I could use. She suggested "n." I told her that spelled "lins" - somehow (I don't even remember how) we got to a place where she suggested L-I-S-Y. I told her that spelled "lisy" and she liked that. I said okay, we can say lisy for fun, but I can't change the way we spell lips.
  • Noa also really enjoyed reading her journal for me and especially enjoyed telling me that her favorite class on Thursday was "vegetable." She seemed to get that was funny.

New Developments

Some interesting new developments at home this weekend, two of them are featured in the photos below:
Picture
Picture
  • Noa found a creative way to hold her Zuzzies while brushing her teeth. At first I was skeptical about them staying put down the back of her shirt, but she proved me wrong. And yes, they are on.
  • The second, less obvious, is the fact that she is brushing her teeth in the bathroom. Brushing her teeth at the table after dinner is a long-standing habit that we have never been able to break (and we've tried!) but this weekend she just decided to brush her teeth upstairs, and was it. We hope this one sticks!
Another development: Noa agreed to get out of bed in the morning with Daddy (rather than insisting on Mommy.) This is another great development for home life... especially for Mommy's home life!

Noa also did great work at Horsey this week. Last week she really didn't pay attention to directions much (it was windy and she enjoyed that), but this weekend she was more focused.

Purple Zuzzy and Yellow Leaves

10/19/2020

Just a short note on this weekend - and with the knowledge that Noa will likely be talking about her Purple Zuzzy this week. Over the pandemic break, we bought Noa a purple vibrating travel pillow which she liked... but it just wasn't sturdy enough for the kind of workout Noa likes to give such things. But she keeps asking for it, so I took a gamble on a neck massager with a vibrating feature which arrived just in time for this past weekend and it was a big hit. You can see it pictured below. As you can see it's not purple....

I used  a purple pen to write "Purple Zuzzy" on it so that it would have some purple on it. It has two handles that she puts her hands through so it stays on her neck.

In other news, it seems that Noa so enjoyed last week's Lunch/Dinner combo that she decided she wanted to do it again. Since we were already behind schedule (it was after 4pm) we went along with her suggestion though I suspect it was mostly a ploy to get to bed earlier so she could have the purple zuzzy again, but it made for a short and easy evening.

I'm also including a photo of Noa at horsey this weekend. All the leaves had turned quite yellow/gold and she seemed to enjoy the wind... but wasn't much interested in following directions. So she had fun.

A Very Special, Special Olympics

10/12/2020

Noa had a great long weekend and was in a happy and pretty agreeable (or at least negotiable) mood all weekend.
Picture
Saturday Noa participated in the Special Olympics along with the two other families who train at the same stable. For this special, socially distanced Special Olympics, the participants were all filmed and medals will be awarded and mailed after the judges watch all the videos. Of course, Noa wasn't worried about whether or not she got a medal. She was more interested in participating in a special horsey event, and hanging out on the Amish, foot-pedal swing.  It was one of the first times we've seen her wear a button up shirt and really enjoy it (she enjoyed the triangular collars.) She was also really excited about the jacket and didn't want to take it off.

On Sunday we spent most of the afternoon on the road. We went leaf-peeping, and then enjoyed a stroller walk on the Northern Rail Trail. For Noa, it was mostly about enjoying having the windows rolled down.  The great victory of the day was that Noa agreed to eat a lunch/dinner combo meal (she is generally agreeable to brunch, but has never agreed to lunch/dinner before.) There was a bit of negotiating - Noa won five pushes on her spinning swing.
A few other highlights: Noa enjoyed facetiming with Grammy, Uncle Jamie and cousins Electra and Petra on Saturday night and managed to get through all three nights without having an accident (especially impressive because she refused her usual late night potty visit.)

Noa seemed to be interested in initiating conversations this weekend, and sharing her own ideas (rather than just choosing between, or just flat out rejecting, choices.) For example, on Sunday when I asked her if we could put medicine in her ear she signed , "Later, at school."

So all-in-all, a very pleasant long weekend.
